Summary
Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain Jeep Grand Cherokee L vehicles equipped with smart lighting modules (SLM). An incomplete SLM software update may cause one or both headlights to become inoperable. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”
Remedy
Dealers will reprogram the SLM software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed January 28, 2022. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC’s number for this recall is Y72.

REASON FOR THIS SAFETY RECALL
Suspect vehicles may have one or both headlamps inoperable. Inoperable headlamps may result in reduced visibility for the driver, which can cause vehicle crash without prior warning.
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (“FMVSS”) 571.108, Lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment, Section 6, Table 1A requires lower beam headlamps that “are energized when the beam selector switch is in the lower beam position.”
SERVICE ACTION
FCA US will conduct a voluntary safety recall on all affected vehicles to reprogram the Smart Lighting Module (SLM). The remedy for this condition is not currently available. Dealers will be notified of the launch of this safety recall by way of established communication methods. This recall is estimated to launch in 4th Quarter of 2021.
