Safety Recall W57 / NHTSA 20V-511 Powertrain Control Module Software – 2019-2020 Ram 3500/4500/5500 Cab Chassis

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Ram 3500, 4500

August 27, 2020 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 20V511000

A damaged engine block may leak oil, which can contact hot engine or exhaust components, increasing the risk of a fire.

NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V511

Manufacturer Chrysler (FCA US LLC)

Components ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

Potential Number of Units Affected 32,318

Summary

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 cab chassis built with a Cummins 6.7L High Output engine. Inadequate warmup protection can cause a lack of oil film on the engine connecting rod bearings while the engine is reaching operating temperature. This can result in engine damage and connecting rod failure, which could potentially puncture the engine block.

Remedy

Reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) follow section A. Inspection Procedure below before reprogramming the PCM.

NOTE: You may be presented with two calibration choices when Fuel Pump, requiring the PCM to b e reprogrammed again with the reprogramming the PCM. Please follow the inspection steps closely to avoid choosing the incorrect calibration. Choosing the incorrect calibration will result in an undesirable noise from the High Pressure correct calibration.

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) on about 34,000 of the above vehicles may have engine calibration software that does not provide adequate engine warm up protection. Inadequate warmup protection can cause a lack of oil film on the rod bearings while the engine is reaching operating temperature, resulting in engine damage and potential connecting rod failure, which may puncture the engine block, and result in oil contacting a competent ignition source and a vehicle fire may occur. A vehicle fire may increase the risk of injury to occupants and persons outside of the vehicle, as well as property damage.

Repair

Reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) follow section A. Inspection Procedure below before reprogramming the PCM.

NOTE: You may be presented with two calibration choices when Fuel Pump, requiring the PCM to b e reprogrammed again with the reprogramming the PCM. Please follow the inspection steps closely to avoid choosing the incorrect calibration. Choosing the incorrect calibration will result in an undesirable noise from the High Pressure correct calibration.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will flash the engine calibration software to enhance the engine warm up protection, free of charge. The recall began September 10, 2020. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler’s number for this recall is W57.
