Z68 – Tire Pressure Monitor Sensors – 2022 Dodge Challenger, Charger, & Chrysler 300

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2022 Dodge Challenger

July 14, 2022 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 22V504000

Inoperative TPMS sensors will not alert the driver to low tire pressure. In addition, a TPMS warning light that is already illuminated from a failed battery sensor will mask an actual tire pressure failure issue. Either of these scenarios can result in tire failure and increase the risk of a crash.

Summary

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2022 Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger, and Chrysler 300 vehicles. The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) sensor battery may fail prematurely and cause the sensor to become inoperative. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 138, “Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems.”

Remedy

Dealers will inspect and replace the TPMS sensors, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 2, 2022. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC’s number for this recall is Z68.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go towww.nhtsa.gov..

REASON FOR THIS SAFETY RECALL

Some of the above vehicles may have been built with a Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS) sensor that prematurely discharge its battery, making the TPMS sensor inoperative. If the TPMS light illuminates because the battery in the sensor prematurely discharges, it could mask an actual low tire pressure condition, possibly resulting in tire failure, which can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning.

The condition described above does not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 571.138 states that “…each vehicle must be equipped with a tire pressure monitor system” that detects “when one or more of a vehicles tire is significantly under-inflated and illuminates a low tire pressure warning telltale.” The tire pressure system in the suspect vehicles may not detect low tire pressure.
